Columbia Heights

“several people insisted that it was a coyote.”

Coyote spotted in Columbia Heights back in 2023, numerous others have been spotted over the years all around town

Chip writes last night:

“So I saw what I thought was an unleashed dog today walking down 14th St in Columbia Heights today and several people insisted that it was a coyote.

I assumed that was impossible, but apparently there have been coyotes spotted in Columbia Heights before?”

100% yes, here’s a coyote sighting from upper 14th Street, NW from last December.

“The eastern coyote is a recent arrival to Rock Creek, migrating to the area around 2016. Coyotes are very adaptable and can live in semi-urban environments. They also contribute to healthy ecosystems by limiting other medium-sized predator populations, allowing greater abundance and diversity of prey species such as song birds!”
