Starburst Plaza Story: “So I’m asking our city leaders: What are we doing so someone doesn’t die?”

Tim Ebner shares with us yesterday:

“This intersection (Starburst Plaza) is what I like to call “somebody else’s problem.” Case in point: Today, I helped a man get life-saving care with Narcan nasal spray after an overdose that almost killed him.Read on, and let’s hold our city leaders accountable, so someone doesn’t die from a preventable overdose

This is one of DC’s largest open air drug markets, and sits in plain sight of major thoroughfares (H St, Maryland Ave, Benning Rd, and Bladensburg Rd).Drug traffickers prey on people including kids walking to school and elderly seeking critical healthcare. But does the city care? Nope. @Mayor_Bowser knows it. @CouncilofDC knows it. And @DCPoliceDept knows it’s a problem too.

When I called 911 to get emergency care for this man, severely dehydrated and unconscious, I was placed on hold for 2 minutes before I could connect to an emergency operator who relayed the call on @dcfireandems to the scene. That’s too long! A completely avoidable problem that city leaders continue to fail us on. WTF, learn more here.

Starburst Plaza is “somebody else’s problem” partly due to its borders. The intersection sits between Wards 5, 6 & 7 and Police Districts 1 & 5.Crimes committed 1 block away make the difference for who is on the case and which city leader cares. The taskforce to address this issue is nowhere to be seen now. So I’m asking our city leaders: What are we doing so someone doesn’t die?
