“With spring marking the start of bear season, the Department of Energy & Environment (DOEE) and the Brandywine Valley SPCA (BVSPCA) are reminding residents of what to do in the event they .
While bear encounters are rare in the District, it is essential to be prepared and understand how to respond safely. Bears typically avoid humans, but they may wander into neighborhoods in search of food, especially during the spring and summer months.

“We want to ensure both people and wildlife stay safe,” said Adam Lamb, CEO of Brandywine Valley SPCA. “Education and awareness are the first steps in preventing dangerous encounters.”
If you see a bear, it’s important to remember to stay calm and do not engage with the bear. Once you are at a safe distance, ideally indoors, call the BVSPCA at (202) 888-PETS.
Be prepared to provide Animal Control Dispatch with the following information: • Location – address and nearest cross streets of where the bear was seen • Time the bear was spotted
• If the bear is alone or if there are any cubs present.
• If the bear appears to be injured.
• Did you take a photo? Or is there a security camera on the premises?
DOEE and the BVSPCA are working in coordination to monitor bear activity and provide support to residents, if needed.”
