This space was previously home to a Paul which abruptly closed back in 2022.

From Compass Coffee:

“Compass Coffee is proud to announce the opening of its 25th cafe, located at 555 13th Street NW, in the heart of downtown DC. Just steps from the Metro Center metro entrance, the new cafe brings Real Good Coffee to one of the busiest, most iconic corners of the city.

“Opening our 25th cafe, right here in the heart of downtown DC, is very humbling.” said Michael Haft, Compass Coffee’s founder. “We opened our first downtown cafe in Chinatown back in 2016. It was our third location, and a big moment for us. To be here now, nine years and 25 cafes later, feels like we are coming full circle. This milestone is the result of a ton of hard work by our team and the incredible support we’ve received from our DC community every step of the way. I’m incredibly proud of our team, and grateful for what we’ve built together.”

With multiple Compass locations already open across downtown DC, this new cafe strengthens the Compass promise to meet you where you are – on your way to work, between meetings, or just out and about downtown. Located right at the top of the Metro Center entrance, this cafe offers unparalleled access and was designed for people who move through the city every day.

With tons of natural light and plenty of seating, it’s the perfect place for a midday coffee run, a client meeting, or catching up with an old friend.

“Summer’s our favorite season at Compass,” said Max Deem, who leads cafe operations. “Downtown DC comes alive with new energy; tourists exploring, friends reconnecting outdoors, and people soaking up the sun. We’re right on the cusp of all that, and opening our newest cafe at 555 feels like the perfect way to kick it off. We can’t wait to see people enjoying cold brews at Compass cafes around the city, and getting excited for the summer season.”

Inside, you’ll find colorful artwork that celebrates the countries where our coffee beans are grown, highlighting the incredible global journey that coffee takes before it lands in your cup. Our goal is always to show the story behind the coffee – it’s about a lot more than just the roast, the grind, and the beans! As always, it’s about people – the people who grow our coffee on amazing farms all over the world, and the incredible team that brings it all together here in DC.”
