MPD recently put out this press release, but (in my opinion) it leaves out several key details including that the fight started at the playground across the street where families had lie on top of their kids while 30 rounds were fired.
This playground (Harry Thomas) is used by DCPS, and is also adjacent to a homeless shelter which has caused crime to spike in the area. While I realize a spike in crime by a shelter isn’t necessarily news worthy, given its proximity to a school, it seems like DCPS and/or MPD can and should be doing more.
As a local parent, I have emails dating back to 2022 to my councilman about safety concerns in the area and without any research I know that this is the 3rd shooting in the area in about 2 years. I’m reaching out because I’m hoping to find a solution — versus just having another “community meeting”.
Unfortunately, despite having avoided the park for the past year, I was there with friends and had to call 911 while watching my husband lay on top of my toddler.”
