From a press release:
“Hopp by Bolt, the global shared mobility platform offering ride-hailing, delivery, car-sharing and micromobility services across 50 countries—has officially launched in the U.S. with its debut in Washington D.C. The company is deploying 720 of its latest electric scooter model across the capital and expects to double its fleet size in the coming months. Hopp will focus on expanding mobility access across the District, with a special emphasis on historically underserved communities. Through its innovative Hopp for All program, qualified low-income residents can initially access free rides for up to 30 minutes, helping to break down financial barriers to transportation and ensure sustainable travel options are accessible to all District residents.
At the heart of Hopp’s launch is the Bolt 6 electric scooter, designed in-house, featuring proprietary technology that sets new standards for urban mobility. Hopp will also be introducing some new features that will enhance safety and overall riding experience, including:
-
Prevention of riding under the influence: Hopp’s proprietary reaction test is used to prevent shared electric scooter drunk riding and improve road traffic safety.
-
ParkAssist+: ParkAssist+ is one of several parking support features available through our responsible parking technology, Smart Parking 360. The feature uses AI parking technology and geo-location to determine if a scooter is parked upright, in a designated parking location, and in accordance with local rules and regulations.
-
Tandem riding prevention: This in-house developed feature aims to educate riders on safe scooter riding. If a customer rides with an additional passenger, they will receive an in-app push notification after the ride is finished advising against tandem riding.
-
Sidewalk and pedestrian detection: Hopp’s AI IOT, developed in-house, uses camera tech that alerts the vehicle to slow down when it detects sidewalks and pedestrians.
Beyond the features above, Hopp is also introducing distance-based pricing, the first of its kind in the U.S. This feature charges scooter riders per distance instead of time-based and enables our customers to focus on finishing their ride comfortably and safely rather than rushing to finish the trip as fast as possible, which may lead to speeding and breaking traffic rules. This model promotes safe riding by encouraging responsible behavior, such as adhering to speed limits and following traffic rules.
“Washington D.C. represents the perfect intersection of innovation and impact for Hopp’s U.S. debut,” said Dmitri Pivovarov, VP, Micromobility at Bolt. “We’re thrilled to be one of the two shared e-scooter operators selected by DDOT and proud that D.C. is the first city in the United States to launch Hopp. By prioritizing accessibility in underserved communities while serving the entire city, we’re demonstrating how smart mobility can create positive change for all residents.”
D.C.’s selection as Hopp’s U.S. gateway builds on the city’s pioneering role in micromobility. It is home to America’s first bike-share program, launched 15 years ago, and its innovative bike lane infrastructure is critical in enabling greater micromobility adoption.
Founded in 2013 by Estonian entrepreneur Markus Villig at age 19, Bolt has grown from a startup into a global mobility leader by prioritizing operational efficiency and integrated services. Hopp’s launch aims to expand the options available to residents and visitors across the continent, providing a safe, efficient way to navigate cities.”
