“Dear PoPville:
My son attends Powell Elementary School on Upshur Street in Petworth. In the mornings before school, he and friends play pickup soccer at the Upshur Park soccer field across the street from Powell. Unfortunately, the large net meant to keep balls from going into Upshur Street has been shredded for ages – as a result, every morning I see kids retrieving balls from the middle of Upshur, a busy street with lots of morning commuters. I took the attached picture with the school bus and the ball in the middle of Upshur street one of the several times the ball went into the street THIS MORNING. [Wed.]
After many 311 requests, I reached out to our councilmember’s office and council staff helped us learn that the work order to fix this net was opened in May 2019.

I am attaching google Streetview images from 2023, 2022, and 2019 showing a torn net.

A neighborhood dad who has been trying to fix the net with zip ties recently discovered that part of it is actually a repurposed net from a tennis court. I’m attaching pictures where you can see the tennis court net (presumably taken from the Roosevelt courts at some point). Very creative. But not an adequate fix, I am sure you’ll agree.
Do you know anyone at DPR who can give us a timeline for fixing this net?”
