Hardware & Blue’s Coffee coming to The Parks at Walter Reed

A combo hardware and coffee shop, with offices above, will be taking over the historic 18,000 SF former nurse’s quarters in Building 12, the building right on Main Drive across from the playground. News of the purchase was announced earlier this fall. Building 12 will be revitalized and transformed into a True Value-branded hardware store that pays homage to its heritage, paired with Blue’s Coffee & Tea Co., a Washington, DC-based Black family-owned coffee and tea cafe. Blue’s Coffee has previously sold their coffee at the farmers market at The Parks.

“Building 12 will be renamed the ‘General Hazel Johnson-Brown Building’ and will be affectionately known as ‘The Hazel,’ said Eric Jenkins, managing member of Evergreen Urban. “The Hazel will pay homage to General Hazel Johnson-Brown’s service at Walter Reed and her distinction as the first Black woman to serve as the Chief of the United States Army Nurse Corps, and the first Black woman to earn the rank of Brigadier General in the history of the US military.” Hazel’s Hardware will serve as a one-stop shop for all common hardware, housewares and lawn and garden needs. The project will also offer approximately 7,000 SF of exceptional Class A office space for rent on the second and third floors.

Stay tuned for more news about this great addition to the neighborhood!”
