DC Council Chairman Mendelson “on the recommendation of the Ad Hoc Committee that Trayon White be expelled”: “There is only one remedy: to remove the corruption from our body.”

From the Office of DC Council Chairman Phil Mendelson:

“DC Council Chairman Phil Mendelson had the following statement on the recommendation of the Ad Hoc Committee that Trayon White be expelled:

“Let’s cut through the legal jargon. Trayon White is accused of taking bribes,” Mendelson said. “The prosecutors have established probable cause, our own independent investigation found substantial evidence that he took bribes, and public servants are prohibited from taking bribes. This is quintessential corruption.”

This morning,

Chairman Mendelson made a motion to expel Councilmember Trayon White from the Council, following the Committee report filed by the Ad Hoc Committee. The motion was adopted unanimously and is a recommendation to the full Council, which will act in late January.

“There is only one remedy: to remove the corruption from our body. This incident has damaged the public trust necessary for government to function well. Anything less than expulsion will not rectify the situation.”
