“Dear PoPville,
Over the last couple of years Bruce Monroe park has become a pole of attraction for drugs and crime. Last year, the play area was vandalized. This year, the fence has been taken down already twice, presumably to obtain access after hours (see picture above). There is always a lot of trash scattered on the ground. It is not unusual to see people using drugs, and a few months ago someone died of overdose.
The situation, already regrettable,
is made worse by the fact that the city chose to have the play areas installed at two opposite sides of the park. There is no fenced playground, as we have it at Hobart, 11&Monroe, Park View. As a result, all the neighborhood’s children, including the children of the Peaceful Play daycare, play in an open area that is highly hazardous.
Calls on the authorities to do something (including something as simple as fencing the play area) have so far been unheard. With the redevelopment of Bruce Monroe still far away (2 years, according to the latest estimates), when is the City going to take action and prioritize children’s safety?”
