I’m trying to manage the social media of a local dance and I’ve noticed something very odd.
Neither Meta (Facebook) nor Google (YouTube) seems to have “Washington, DC” as a location for their users. I don’t have any experience with the audience stats in these platforms, but the absence is striking. Here’s our Facebook followers by location, we have around 400 followers, but the top city is Silver Spring with 18? Most followers probably do not list their current city (although FB surely knows it from the IP addresses!), but this gap is persistent in all FB stats. DC just does not fucking exist for them.
I call total bullshit.
Is there something I’m missing here?
It’s bad enough that we don’t get representation in Congress, but no love, nor representation, nor even the recognition of DC’s right to exist in the princely halls of Meta and Alphabet, our cyber overlords?”
