“missed jury duty scam”

Ed. Note: MPD warned of a “Jury Duty Phone Scam” back in March.

“Dear PoPville,

Thought I’d throw this out there. I just received a call from a DC number (202) from a gentlemen claiming to be a DC police officer Andrew L., badge # saying I missed jury duty. Interestingly enough, I was summoned for jury duty in april, then postponed to May, then was told I did not have to report on the date of my service once I registered the night before (followed all protocol).

During the call he aggressively said I missed jury duty and had a court order from the judge. I told him this felt illegitimate and asked to speak to a supervisor. He said I would receive a call back from the police department momentarily. I then received a call with the caller ID from DCNET and it was him again. He asked how it showed up on my caller ID and again suggested I missed jury duty (then babbled something about me needing to go to my bank). I hung up, called that same number back and it did take me to the DC metro police department, who looked him the name and badge number and said it was likely a scam.

I then called the original number back and he answered again. I told him the DC police department could not verify his name and badge number and he went silent.

Wondering if anyone else has ever had this happen?”
