“Safety Concerns on WMATA”

“Dear PoPville,

Yesterday afternoon, I took the L2 bus from Farragut Square up to Adams Morgan with my mother-in-law and my wife. A few stops into the journey, a visibly intoxicated man boarded the bus, carrying a bottle of clear alcohol. He sat directly behind my family and began shouting, creating an uncomfortable and tense atmosphere.

As we continued several blocks towards Adams Morgan, we decided to get off the bus hastily to avoid further confrontation. Another passenger reprimanded the driver for allowing the inebriated man to board, to which the driver seemingly responded, “What am I supposed to do?”

This incident raises important questions about the safety and regulations on public transportation.

Has anyone else encountered issues with drunk, potentially mentally ill, or violent individuals on public transport in DC?

What responsibility does the city government have to prevent such individuals from boarding, especially when they’re visibly carrying alcohol?

Is WMATA aware of these concerns, and are there complaint mechanisms in place to address them?”
