“The Folger building fully reopens June 21”

201 East Capitol Street, SE courtesy The Folger Shakespeare Library

From a press release:

“The Folger Shakespeare Library will reopen to the public on Friday, June 21, 2024. Our new exhibition halls, new café, expanded gift shop, accessible entrances and gardens will all be available to the public then. Timed-entry passes are recommended when visiting the Folger, and they will be available to reserve on our website beginning in May.

The Folger wants to welcome everyone to engage with and be inspired by Shakespeare’s works, the arts, and the humanities, and to serve as a center of discovery and creativity for scholars, students, teachers, families, our neighbors throughout DC, and visitors from around the world. The four-year renovation project has enabled us to build a variety of creative entry points through which to consider Shakespeare and his world.

One of those entry points is a poem written by US Poet Laureate and Pulitzer Prize-winner Rita Dove that is now inscribed on the garden wall along the path that leads visitors down to the Folger’s new west entrance from East Capitol Street and 2nd Street SE. The text of the poem is now available on our website, and Dove was interviewed for the latest episode of the Shakespeare Unlimited podcast.

We hope both poem and podcast make you excited to visit in June. We’ll be sending more updates about what the Folger is planning for reopening in the weeks ahead. Keep us in your email address book and follow us on social media for more updates.

We’ll see you this summer!”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
