“The multi-award-winning percussionist, composer, and educator Fran Vielma performs with his all-stars jazz orchestra for the Brightwood Park Community on 713 Kennedy St. NW, Washington, DC 20011 this Saturday Nov. 11th at 12pm.
The concert will be completely FREE thanks to the support of the DC Commission for the Arts and Humanities – PEF Grant awarded to Vielma this fall.
The initiative was envisioned by Vielma and Charvis Campbell of HR Record -the Mid-Atlantic’s ultimate vinyl collector store located in the Brightwood neighborhood, after a sidewalk concert series organized by Mr. Campbell during the pandemic.
Additionally, after the concert, Vielma will get into the studio to record his first large ensemble album featuring a world-class cast of musicians including Grammy Award Nominees saxophonist Troy Roberts, and trumpeter Alex Norris among others.
Fran Vielma Jazz Orchestra was premiered in 2021 to showcase contemporary Pan-American jazz, a historic blend that started around the 19th century in New Orleans with the Afro-Caribbean diaspora encouraged by the Haitian Revolution. Artists like Justo Aspiazú, Chano Pozo, Mario Bauza, Machito, Chico O’Farrell, Dizzy Gillespie, as well as Lucho Bermudez in Colombia, Astor Piazzolla in Argentina, and Aldemaro Romero in Venezuela have been an inspiration for Vielma.
Vielma‘s Orchestra has been in residency at Mr. Henry’s Jazz Club in DC since 2022 and has performed at the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival, Sonic Lifeline Baltimore Jazz Series, and the Hispanic Jazz Series of the legendary Blues Alley Jazz Club for the past two years.
