A belated rant and rave from Friday…

RANT: we used to have two signs in our front yard on 15th St NW, one a rainbow flag “Love is Love” and the other a sign from the National Council of Jewish Women saying “Abortion Bans are Against Our Religion”. On Friday afternoon, some of our neighbors encountered a man

wearing a “Bush/Regan” cap and leaning over our fence, who had pulled the signs up and was in the process of destroying them. When they confronted him, he tossed down the signs and stalked off without a word, but they saw him again a block away. Our neighbors notified us; then when they saw some police officers at the nearby Edlavitch JCC, they notified them. (BTW, this isn’t the first time one of our lawn signs has apparently pushed someone’s buttons — this summer someone removed our DC 51st State sign).

REVEL: two Metro PD officers then came over to our house to take a report. They were great. Both are reserve officers, part of a contingent who had volunteered (unpaid) to help monitor Jewish (and Muslim) sites on the supposed “Hamas Day of Rage”. They had just come from checking in with the security team at the JCC, and spent considerable time speaking with me — eventually their sergeant and a detective came over too — it was quite the commotion. I don’t have a lot of hope they’ll find Mr. Regan/Bush, because it’s a big city and all he needs to do is ditch his hat, but I appreciate their concern and professionalism. I also appreciated the extensive police presence when I attended services Friday night, both at my synagogue and others in town. Now it’s time for us to buy more signs, with firmer stakes, and display them more prominently.”
