Maddie asks: “looking to get a DC marriage license before the (likely) shutdown. Any thoughts on in person application vs online? Ty!”

Replies were:

“FWIW – our online application never went anywhere. Just go in with your documents and expect to spend an hour or two.”

“We had trouble with the online application and even when we managed to submit it online, we called the court and they had no record of it being submitted. We went two days ago in person and they confirmed they are closed during a shutdown, so go this week if you need it soon!!”

“In person! Only takes about an hour and it’s totally done and checked off the long wedding to-do list. I submitted the online application twice, over a year ago, and never heard back…”

“To echo others comments:we submitted online and just never heard anything back.

Went down in person and had it in less than an hour.”

Ed. Note: During the 2019 shutdown emergency legislation was passed by the DC Council which allowed marriages to continue during that shutdown.
