Update on the East Potomac Park Bike Lanes “a hot grill in the bike lane (for some reason), and everything else”

“Dear PoPville,

I saw you post a while back about the status of bike lanes around Hanes Point, so I wanted to share that the project has been completed. As advertised, it’s dedicated one lane of space to pedestrian/cycle lanes going both directions and a buffer (without barriers) to the remaining vehicular lane.

On the whole I’d say it’s a step up from before, though certainly not perfect.

The biggest improvement may be the elimination of front-in parking around the end. That was always somewhat harrowing to pass by on a bike trying to see which cars had drivers and where about to back up into you. Though as expected, I saw just about every misuse of the traffic pattern imaginable while I was out there. Pedestrians and bikes going the wrong way, cars driving in the bike lanes, cars parked in bike lanes, a hot grill in the bike lane (for some reason), and everything else. The best was a car that went into the bike lane to drive around a park ranger (who was already going at least 5 mph over the speed limit). For those wondering, the ranger did not seem inclined to ticket the driver.”
