“crowdsourcing local resources for people like us suffering the trauma of unexpectedly losing our furry family members”

“Dear PoPville,

My wife and I were among the owners that lost our dog yesterday at District Dogs during the floods. I won’t say how many, but the manager at the Humane Rescue Alliance where her body was taken said that there were many others that also died. There is an immense amount of grief so many pet parents like us must be going through, and I’m hoping I can turn to this incredible community for help in crowdsourcing local resources for people like us suffering the trauma of unexpectedly losing our furry family members. We aren’t even in town right now, as she was being boarded during a trip, but we are headed back today and would love some help when we get back and the immense sense of loss fully kicks in.

Thank you to all of you who responded to my comment on the original post, offering your condolences. Even just a few words of compassion eases this pain ever so slightly.”

Another reader sends from District Dogs:

“To the District Dogs family,

We wanted to send a message following up on our communication last night about the flooding at District Dogs Northeast.

We are heartbroken and want to express our profound sadness to our clients who are dealing with the loss of beloved members of their families. As animal lovers and strong advocates for animal welfare ourselves, this is deeply and personally painful. This is an absolute tragedy and we are all devastated.

Yesterday, within just a few minutes, the flooding went from blocking our front doors to breaking through the glass wall sending 6 feet of water into our business. As that wall of water came upon them, our staff worked heroically to save as many animals as possible despite real danger to their own lives. Many had to cling to shelves and counters themselves.

We are forever grateful for the heroic actions of our staff and first responders whose efforts resulted in saving dozens of dogs.

Again, our hearts and thoughts are with all of our clients and staff who experienced a terrible trauma yesterday and now are enduring the resulting pain and loss. We will continue to be in touch over the coming days and weeks. You can reach us at districtdogs.com if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

The District Dogs Team”

We’re about a month out from summer. That means you’ve still got time for spring cleaning!

Lexi Grant, an operations manager at Well-Paid Maids, shared her go-to spring cleaning tips with WTOP News. Step one? Declutter. Get rid of items you don’t use, find space for items that need a home and organize those areas.

Then, it’s time to dust. Lexi starts with high-touch surface areas (think: refrigerator, dishwasher, counters, microwave). One area she sees often neglected is the bedroom — and it makes sense. Heavy furniture is difficult to move around, but it’s important to really get in there so dust doesn’t affect your sleep.
