“Dear PoPville,

When I was visiting my parents in Indianapolis last month, my mom mentioned that she had a brochure from her senior class trip to Washington and New York back in 1961. I had fun looking at this brochure exactly one week shy of 62 years since she’d left on that trip. I thought you (and possibly others) might also enjoy seeing what highlights were listed way back then for a trip to our fine city (or “the ‘Paris’ of the western hemisphere”).

Hotel A was at 15th and L, NW. And, of course, hotel B became the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Woodley Park. Check out the highlights they list for dining. I don’t remember Sholls Cafeteria but the internet tells me at least one location lasted until 2001. It looks like Casino Royal and the Lotus were “supper clubs” at 806 and 727 14th Street, NW. And Hogate’s was at 800 Water Street, SW. The National Historical Wax Museum was at 26th and E, NW. I love that I first visited DC (moving here for good just months later in 1987) at the same age my mom was when she came on this East Coast adventure. So many of these spots mentioned are right near the various places I’ve lived and worked since arriving.

Attached are the eight photos of the brochure that relate to her tour package.”
