“U.S. Census Bureau Numbers Show DC’s Population Stabilizing”

From the DC Office of Planning:

“The U.S. Census Bureau released new population numbers that estimate the District’s population is 671,803 as of July 1, 2022. This is the first year the District has experienced a net positive population increase since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The recent data from the Census Bureau about the growth in the District’s population signals that our city continues on a strong road to recovery and serves as evidence of the positive impact of Mayor Bowser’s investments in bringing people back to our neighborhoods and our downtown areas,” said Anita Cozart, Acting Director of the DC Office of Planning (OP).

Data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that the District added 3,012 people from July 1, 2021 to July 1, 2022. This growth is due to an increase in births, a decrease in deaths, and an increase in net migration between 2021 and 2022. During this period, more than 8,000 babies were born in the District, continuing the increase in DC’s population of young children. International migration into the District has returned to pre-pandemic levels with a net gain of 4,558 people moving into the District. This data signals an upward direction in population growth and a positive indication of the end of the pandemic-induced population decline for the District. For more information on this data release, visit the U.S. Census Bureau’s website. Additional demographic data about the District is available on OP’s Demographic Data hub at opdatahub.dc.gov.”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
