Red Line service “to improve” Today

“Metro’s Red Line customers will see more frequent service beginning Monday, December 5, as the transit agency continues to bring more 7000-series trains into service.

Red Line trains will operate every eight minutes during the peak periods of 6 – 9 a.m. and 3 – 7 p.m. to alleviate crowding during the busiest weekday hours. Red Line trains will operate every 10 minutes at all other times, except during scheduled trackwork.

The Red Line service improvements are the next step toward restoring Metrorail service to budgeted levels following pandemic service reductions and the railcar shortage caused by the removal of 7000-series trains from the tracks last year.

Gradual service improvements are anticipated this winter and into the spring. While railcar availability has been the main challenge to improving frequencies for customers, Metro is also being affected by industry-wide shortages of rail and bus operators that the agency is aggressively working to address.
