Lidl opening first DC store in Skyland Town Center on Wednesday!

From a press release:

“Lidl US, recently ranked a top U.S. grocer by USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards, announced today that it will celebrate the grand opening of its newest store in Skyland Town Center in Southeast D.C. on Wednesday, September 28. The store, located at 2224 Town Center Dr SE, will operate daily from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. This will be the first full-service grocery store to open in Wards 7 and 8 in more than a decade.

Local leaders, including D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and Deputy Mayor For Planning and Economic Development John Falcicchio, will participate in a ribbon cutting ceremony the day before on Tuesday, September 27 at 4:00 P.M. The store will host a soft opening of the store from 4:00 – 5:00 P.M. that day.

Local officials applauded the news:

“We are ready – and the community is ready – to welcome Lidl to Ward 7,” said Mayor Muriel Bowser. “This grocery store has been a long-time coming, and it is going to help us make Skyland into a true town center. Welcome to DC, Lidl.”

“Lidl’s opening is an exciting step forward for Skyland Town Center, offering our residents at The Crest a top-quality supermarket at their doorstep,” said WC Smith Chairman and CEO Chris Smith. “WC Smith has long been active in Wards 7 and 8, and we appreciate Lidl’s commitment and partnership in providing a much-needed resource for everyone who lives in the neighborhood.”

“The opening of Lidl is one of many important milestones that will truly make Skyland Town Center the heartbeat of Wards 7 and 8,” said Rappaport President Henry Fonvielle. “From the very beginning we understood the importance of bringing a wide variety of food options – particularly fresh produce and other healthy food products to this community. Our partnership with Lidl at Skyland Town Center will create an avenue for residents to shop within their neighborhood for years to come.”

Lidl is creating more than 60 jobs with the opening of its new Skyland store. Starting pay for Store Associates will be $16.50 per hour, which includes comprehensive benefits. Lidl offers healthcare for all full-and-part-time positions, regardless of hours worked per week.

The Lidl Skyland store is proudly pursuing LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certification for Building Design & Construction, a globally recognized green-building rating system. LEED certification is a globally recognized symbol of sustainability achievement and leadership. To obtain this certification, Lidl Skyland is prioritizing the use of sustainable building materials to create a healthy, energy-efficient, and “green” store. Lidl Skyland will also feature six electric vehicle charging stations for customers and employees.
