“Detectives with the Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit are investigating a traffic fatality involving a bicyclist that occurred on Wednesday, July 20, 2022, at the intersection of 21st Street and I Street, Northwest.
The preliminary investigation revealed, at approximately 8:09 am, a driver operating a Mack truck was traveling southbound in the 900 block of 21st Street, NW, which is a one-way travel lane. A bicyclist was also traveling southbound in the same block and on the right side of the Mack truck.
At the intersection of 21st Street and I Street NW, the Mack truck began to make a right hand turn onto I Street NW. The bicyclist attempted to ride ahead of the Mack truck and was struck by the front passenger side of the truck, causing significant injuries.
DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported to a local hospital, where after all life-saving efforts failed, she was pronounced dead.
The decedent has been identified as 40 year-old Shawn O’Donnell, of Northwest, DC.

“Advocates and community members from across the DC region will gather at the sites of three fatal bike crashes over the weekend to install ghost bikes. Since the beginning of July, three bicyclists have been killed by drivers while traveling in DC. A ghost bike is a quiet statement in support of bicyclists’ right to safe travel. The organizers are demanding the District government to improve infrastructure and enforce current regulations that could prevent future fatalities.
“Our transportation system is designed to kill nearly 43,000 people a year and it’s working as designed,” said organizer Monica Morin.

A vigil will be held for Michael Gordon on Friday, July 22 at 7 p.m at the intersection of 7th St NW & Rhode Island Ave NW. The ghost bike installation will follow the vigil. Mr. Gordon was killed by a driver in DC on July 15.
A ghost bike for Michael Hawkins Randall, who was traveling by bicycle, and ghost shoes for pedestrian Charles Jackson will be installed on Saturday, July 23 at 6 p.m. at the intersection of Minnesota Ave NE & Nannie Hellen Borroughs Ave NE. Both gentlemen were killed by a driver on July 2.
A ghost bike for Shawn O’Donnell will be installed on Monday, July 25 at 6 p.m. at the intersection of 21st St NW & Eye (I) St NW. Ms. O’Donnell was killed by a driver while bike commuting on July 20.
All events will take place rain or shine. Participants are encouraged to wear white.
Since January, 21 people have been killed by drivers while traveling in the District, including three bicyclists, 11 pedestrians, three drivers, two passengers and two motorcyclists.”
