“Mom is visiting, suggestions for sights/activities with limited/light walking required?”

DCd asked: “DC area friends: my mom is visiting at the end of June. Her mobility is somewhat limited and she won’t want to use assistance like a wheelchair.

Any suggestions for sights/activities with limited/light walking required? I would appreciate some ideas!”

The excellent suggestions:

“@ANStweets (Audubon Naturalist Society) has a new accessible nature trail at our #Woodend headquarters in Chevy Chase. Benches at nice intervals, she might like walking sticks too. See a stream, pond, birds, and muddy campers running around like maniacs if during the week!”

“If you have a car, the Arboretum is great to drive through. You can hop out when you want to; you can park within 30-40 yards of the columns.

If you can grab (free) tickets, the Washington Monument is an elevator ride.

The double decker bus tours are fun, too.”

“Thirding this idea, my mother is in the same exact position and we did a drive through of the arboretum and got out at key points for short walks.”

“My mom is in a similar situation and we did one of the bus tours but didn’t get off at the stops. We just enjoyed the driving tour.”

“With a handicapped pass on your car you can park right in front of the Modern section of National Gallery doors which should re-open by then. They even have wheelchairs you can borrow. There’s no better parking on the whole DC mall.”

“Hey folks, I did find this one-week DC disability parking pass you can use for disabled visitors (in addition to some other purposes).”

“Trolley tour is great (better than double decker) and the loop that goes up embassy row and Georgetown is the best. Informative and beautiful and you can just sit back and enjoy.”

“Millennium Stage performances at the Kennedy Center are great.”

“NGA West Gallery, constitution entrance (no stairs and near an elevator). Lots of galleries to look in with benches. Yummy cafe, she can sit while you get food!”

“Will you be able to drive her around? If so, the National Arboretum is nice to just drive through. A drive along the Mall, by Jefferson Memorial, around Hains Point is nice. A boat ride along the Potomac is nice or a lunch at the Washington Sailing Marina.”

“FDR Memorial”

“Taking a car tour of monuments in the evening / night is really lovely”

“Something else to consider for walking assistance that isn’t so blatant is hiking sticks. I have a pair which collapses so they don’t take up much room.”

“If you want to see the Monuments, I had good luck using the Old Trolley with my grandparents. It majorly cut the walking and provided some history between stops.”

“The Renwick (adjacent to White House) is a small museum so it would be easy to do. Also a nighttime open top bus tour could be fun if the weather permits.”

“Ferry ride from The Warf. She can get dropped off close to the ferry and not have to walk too far and can then can sit once on the boat and see the sights from the water. Another thought is Iwo Jima and the Air Force Memorial, both in Arlington. Both offer nice views of the city and are cool in and of themselves and you can pretty much park right next to them.”

“Check out the bonsai exhibit at the arboretum. Close to a parking lot, very centralized and beautiful exhibit.”

“Ferry ride, pedicabs and double decker buses are great!”

“Artechouse is very little walking and amazing immersive exhibits.”

“Not sure if they are still operating but DC Duck tours are fun you see all the requisite sites and get a boat ride on the Potomac.”

“Smithsonian Castle. Not a lot of floor space to cover, still some fine exhibits, great scale model of the whole Mall, fine cafe, beautiful garden out back, you’re welcome!”

“Lincoln’s Cottage? The Aquatic Gardens?”

“Anything indoors and with working A/C (Smithsonians, LOC, National Archives, US Capitol – with your representative). You don’t want anyone to suffer the DC heat. Evening sightseeing outdoors probably is a way to go.”

“My mother in law is in a similar place. We like the planet word museum as it has a small building footprint and loads to see in each space. Also has a elevator in the center space. And its inside away from the heat!”

“Library of Congress is also an option and it’s breathtaking.”

“The National Archives is great. Seeing the Constitution and Declaration of Independence requires very little walking, and it’s a nice way to escape the heat.”

“My mom is similar and she’s love the The yards park.”

“The botanical gardens that are reopened by the capital, the Air Force Memorial, the 911 Memorial at the Pentagon, or just get a day pass for the hop on hop off”
