Update: Streets reopened. “Allegedly a suspicious package.” continues to keep Connecticut Ave closed in Van Ness

4200 block of Connecticut Ave, NW

Update: “MPD reports the investigation has concluded at Connecticut Ave NW between Albemarle St NW and Tilden St NW and all associated street closures are open.”

“Dear PoPville,

Walking down Connecticut this morning to get to the Van Ness metro stop, and saw Connecticut is blocked off from Veazey Terrace and presumably Van Ness St with a crime scene van and techs taping off the corner of Veazy & Conn. Secret Service is also all around directing traffic to turn around at the light on Windom. Didn’t see any notice on MPD’s twitter, and Google only shows a crash further up where the police are turning card around. Curious if anyone else reported anything?”

Readers started reporting at 7:37am: “Connecticut Avenue both lanes are blocked due to police activity between Veazey Terrace and Van Ness Street.”

“Allegedly a suspicious package. Secret Service is all over and won’t let pedestrians through.”

“They’ve extended the closure now, Porter to Albermarle”

“There are several embassies nearby – Pakistan, China, Israel, others. Secret Service is always prowling around the area.”

NBC Washington reports: “A D.C. Fire & EMS hazmat team responded to the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China at 3505 International Place NW. They are investigating the contents of the bottle.

9:25am: “They’ve reopened to pedestrians”
