“Renting a Condo in DC?”

“Dear PoPville,

I’m looking to rent out his condo that I own. I spoke to a realtor and the process sounded a little more involved than I initially imagined, including getting a license and notifying my mortgage lender that I would be renting the property (potentially giving them the ability to refinance and raise my rate?). My mortgage contract says that the property has to be my primary residence for at least 1 year, which it has been. Otherwise it is silent on renting.

I was hoping your readers could answer: what tips do you have for someone looking to rent their condo in DC? Should I use a property management company or try to do it myself? What property management companies would you recommend, and what “cut” of the rent is typical for a property management company to take in DC? How do you find good tenants these days (this is my biggest fear!!)? Any advice/recommendations from people who have been down this road would be so so appreciated!”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
