“Dear PoPville,
I understand that it is possible to file a claim against the District for damage done to cars by potholes.
My car (very old, insured only for liability) was pretty much totaled in a pothole incident. The damage renders it un-driveable, and the repair would be almost double what I think I could have sold it for. The forms ask for repair costs and receipts, but I’m selling it for parts, for much less than I could have sold it as a working vehicle. Does the sale negate my claim?
I’m also hoping to recoup the cost of towing.
Some online advice says to include proof the District was liable, such as a 311 repair request that wasn’t fulfilled. How can I find out if this particular pothole had been reported?
I’d love any advice or experiences. Thanks!”
