Dear PoPville

“Stop with the rat poison – it’s leathal to dogs and other small animals”

“Dear PoPville,

STOP with Rat Poisoning: even small amounts kills dogs and other animals like squirrels, birds, and other wildlife….DO NOT put out green rat poison pellets, the rats carry them to other people’s yards and even trace amounts can be lethal to wildlife and our pets! We all want mice gone, but not at the expense of killing other harmless animals and our beloved pets. If you are putting it out, STOP and if you know others who are, please spread the word….let’s all use the HUMANE way to abate mice, put out traps and/or call 311 to talk to the rodent control they will help with finding burrows and making sure we take care of the problem the ethical way without selfishly and unethically killing our fur-babies! FYI – Glue Traps are also harmful as birds can fly into them and lose their wings.

From my hours of research on the topic and trying to get rid of the rat infestation problem in our ally, and my understanding, there is no such thing as “safe” poison, just safer ways to use it so it’s less toxic to pets – ie putting poison in traps to contain the rats once they sniff out the “bait” (or poison). Just sprinkling rat bait out in the open is not effective, they are prone to just pick it up and move it to other people’s yards where animals can get to it RatX claims to be safe around pets but the reason this product won’t hurt dogs is that dogs can throw up and get the product out of their system. Rats are not able to throw up and are stuck with what they eat.”
