Katherine asks: “DC folks: any art museums (broadly defined) in the DC area to add to this list? Found myself going to same few and wanted to check out some other places.”
The early replies:
“National museum of African American history & national museum of African art, Longview gallery,”
“The word museum is an artistic display of words. I highly recommend.”
“The @librarycongress has interesting exhibits, recently they displayed Courtroom Sketches, plus maps and illuminated texts are art! And as bonus you can swing by the Free Little Art Gallery on E. Capitol Street”
“Maybe an unorthodox choice, but when they’re done with the renovation I’d add Air & Space (on the Mall). There are several very large murals, the early aviation trophies are essentially a sculpture collection, and the early Islamic and medieval astrolabe collection is beautiful”
“Not sure if they’re open, but I’ve been meaning to check out the galleries on the Georgetown campus”
“Dupont Underground? Should re-open soon.”
“(Its not in DC but…) @TheAVAM (AmVisionaryArtMuseum) up the road is worth a visit for some [definitely not DC] art.”
“Natural history museum has a very fun gem and stones display and the human evolution exhibit is great. There’s a small special exhibit on art focusing on human/nature interaction”
“National Postal Museum by Union Station”
“If you can get to Baltimore (technically sort of outside the D.C. area, but close enough, I think) the Walters Museum is amazing and free. The place is huge, too, and has other exhibits/artifacts along with the art.”
“National Building Museum under “broadly defined”
“National museum of health and medicine in silver spring!”
