Washington, DC

Thanks to Steve for sending this beautiful shot:

“Spotted in Petworth, near 8th and Shepherd. Let’s hope it gets to work on our huge rat population. And there’s the rub: people want to poison the nuisance rats, which is understandable. But poisoning rats poisons rat predators like hawks. Fewer predators, more rats. I don’t know the answer, but we’re not going to poison our way out of this.”

If you spot a hawk or any interesting wildlife around town, lunching or otherwise, and get a good photo please send in an email where you spotted it to [email protected] and I’ll add it to the queue. Hawks around Town is made possible by a generous grant from the Ben and Sylvia Gardner foundation.
