Let’s Talk Parks, Playgrounds, Fields and Social Distancing a Sec

I’ve been getting tons of photos from folks showing groups of people clustered together in parks, playing sports, etc. Yes, yes, we should get outside and get fresh air. However, when doing so social distancing still must be practiced our WE ARE GOING TO BE SCREWED. So please do enjoy a bike ride, a hike, a jog, a walk but please do it responsibly. [God that’s a sentence I never thought I’d type.]

Here’s a helpful graphic from Montgomery County:

One reader writes:

“I’m fortunate to live near the Banneker Recreation Center and take advantage of the terrific track and field while fitness centers are closed amid COVID-19.

SO many neighbors are also modifying their workout routines and capitalizing from this outdoor space- it’s been nice seeing others enjoying this space as much as me. While many of the users are super respectful of sharing the space and minding the recommended 6 foot social distance, there are a couple of users who think this rule of caution just doesn’t apply to them. These disrespectful track users breeze by those they are passing within an inch, all the while huffing and puffing and scattering respiratory droplets on/around courteous users. COVID-19 or not, it’s rude and poor social etiquette.

The simple solution is I could stay at home and not use a public track and field. It’s just a shame because so many of us are minding social distancing while enjoying the fresh air and each other… from a 6 foot distance.

Thanks for the vent. Stay healthy!”

Update: Just in from DPR:

“Although DPR’s playgrounds, parks and fields remain open during the District’s Public Health Emergency in response to coronavirus (COVID-19), we recommend that residents do not congregate in groups larger than 10 while using public, outdoor amenities. Additionally, patrons should continue to practice social distancing, standing at least six (6) feet apart, even while outdoors.”
