“Local Gem Changes Hands, Stays in Family”

Ed. Note: Thank God.

From the very fine folks at Calvert Woodley:

“Calvert Woodley is changing hands. But, not to worry; the venerable destination for wine and cheese is staying in the family. Ed Sands, owner and operator since 1966, is passing the torch to his son, Michael Sands, who has worked in the business since 1998.

In one iteration or another, Calvert Woodley’s storied history began in 1946. One of the keys to the store’s success is the longevity of the staff, several of whom have been with the store for over 25 years, with a few at 40 years and still going!

In the age of big-box shopping, a local gem like Calvert Woodley relies on true expertise and family ownership to carry on a tradition of exceptional service.

“Our goal is to be the place to go when you’re invited to a dinner party and need a special bottle of wine or you’re having friends over and want a cheese course that will impress,” said Michael. “Our knowledgeable staff is here to help you make a great choice or introduce you to new and exciting options at any price point.”

While the extensive selection and reliable expertise won’t change, there are some new things on the horizon. Calvert Woodley customers can expect more after-hours tastings of wine and spirits, an ever-changing beer program, and a new Instagram-able mural (coming soon). Stay tuned to see what else they have in store. Cheers!”
