Dear PoPville

“Gardening in the land of rats”

“Dear PoPville,

Can we talk about container gardens and rats? I love having a patio for the ability to small time garden in planters. I’m frustrated each spring with rats eating plants though. Has anyone found things they won’t destroy? So far here is my list of things they eat and don’t.

Rats will destroy: Any and all basil but always the thai basil first, climbing vines like morning glory and moon flowers, bergamont, begonias, wormwood, valerian

Rats seem to let live: mint, lemon grass, rosemary, silver leaf plants

I’m in Adams Morgan, just above street level, for what it’s worth and not trying to grow any vegetables.”
