“Does D.C. Recycle?!”

Photo by PoPville flickr user Kate Conradt

“Dear PoPville,

This week the trash truck came down our street today in Park View and clearly emptied both the trash and recycling bins into the same trash truck. When they went around the corner I got a video of it – as I didn’t want to ask/confront them about it in front of my house for obvious reasons.

My neigbor and I were/are both bummed about it, as we are avid recyclers. Some people do not recycle because they think that it all ends up getting mixed up and thrown away anyhow. I know that happened years ago and the city caught heat for it, but I figured they had it all sorted (pun intended) by now.

Maybe this was an isolated incident, but it makes me skeptical about DC’s overall recycling. Honestly, there has always been a small skeptical part of me that wonders if they actually recycle, but I’ve never taken the time to investigate.

My neighbor callled 311 and told them, but that seems like the old, ‘who is policing the police’ deal. I would greatly appreciate your advice if there something to do that might bring a change/fix to this issue. BTW please do not publish this email and info with my name, as I want it to be an anonymous complaint/observation from a concerned citizen.”
