I wanted to let you know that today The Wilderness Society erected a 10-foot-tall working Oil Rig on the National Mall in front of tourists, cherry blossoms, and Washington Monument in support of their Too Wild to Drill campaign.
As you know, energy companies already have claim to more land than they can use — of the 27 million acres currently under lease, more than half are sitting idle. Giving away some of our last remaining wild places for the oil industry’s short-term gain is unconscionable right now.
The demonstration, was meant to remind visitors that public lands belong to all of us, not just the extractive industry. We must come together to protect our wildest places for future generations, not allow drilling to permanently destroy them. “
