Wild! Thanks to Elizabeth for sending:
“Saturday morning near Glens Garden market–hundreds of thousands of bees moving their hive, from this bush to this tree, stopping pedestrians and traffic. A passerby was a former beekeeper and called a DC Beekeepers Alliance, and he said they are resting in the tree in an enormous mass while scout bees keep searching for the next hive location. They rested precariously in an enormous clump in the tree. Apparently they are European Honey Bees.
Hours later a crowd has gathered and watched the bee keepers rescue the bees–the hive was about 8lbs of bees. Of course it happened as the Correspondents dinner was starting so the street was crazy.
The DC Beekeepers Alliance is on the scene saving the bees. [Ed. Note: If you see a swarm please call or text (202) 255-4318 or email [email protected]] They are taking the bees to an apiary on Capitol Hill
, and they hope they will produce a honey crop this year. They said the swarms are the most healthy bees, and are very gentle. Too often people think they are dangerous and try to kill them, so the rescue operation is important given how bees are dying off.”

If you spot a hawk or any interesting wildlife around town, lunching or otherwise, and get a good photo please send in an email where you spotted it to [email protected] and I’ll add it to the queue. Hawks around Town is made possible by a generous grant from the Ben and Sylvia Gardner foundation.
