Commissioner Scott Davies (district 09) of Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 2B/Dupont missed last week’s meeting, but no one present faulted him.
“It’s more important than this,” said Commissioner Mike Silverstein (district 06) in an announcement at the beginning of the October 11 meeting.
Silverstein was referring to Davies’ work on the hospital ship USNS Comfort, which has been deployed to Puerto Rico in the wake of Hurricane Maria.
According to Davies’ Linked-In profile, his day job is at the US Maritime Administration, but he is also an officer in the Navy Reserve. He was out of town on business last week when he received word that he was to be activated and shipped out from Naval Station Norfolk. Silverstein told the ANC Davies flew back to DC immediately, had a very brief reunion with his family, caught a few hours’ sleep, and woke before dawn to make the drive from DC to Norfolk.
According to the web site of the US Naval Institute, the USNS Comfort has a crew of about 50 when not deployed, but must add over 1,100 people when called into action.
