No It’s Not a New Nordstrom Rack, It’s Just About Comey Time!

Embrace your inner Washingtonian. Just embrace it!!

Update:

  • MadMax

Wow, this might be one of the most DC meta things I’ve ever seen. More people cut out work to stand in lines for Congressional hearings than show up for midday baseball games…

    • Joshua

Sights such as this are the reason why I could never argue with the rest of the country who thinks we’re a bunch of dorks.

      • anon

I’ve never heard anyone say that about us. I thought we were a self-enriching bunch of swampmonsters who deserve a recession.

    • RD

      Well, yeah.

  • NH Ave Hiker

Kind of dumb if you ask me. This hearing really isn’t going to do anything. Plus, we have already read the written testimony.

    • Rich

It’s the subtext & context not the words and there’s the occasional surprise. Any number of things have drawn this sort of thing—Plame gate, contentious supreme court confirmations, etc. It is very DC and probably better to see it live than to suffer through the CNN version of it later.

    • ST21

      Pretty much

    • NH Ave Hiker

I was wrong, there was actually some good stuff in there.

  • anonabeer

to be fair, I think they are just waiting for the place to open.

    • MadMax

Is anyone else surprised that Shaw’s Tavern is still open?

      • dcd

        [raises hand]

      • Bobert

Things turned around after the Front Page folks bought it from the Firehouse group. It’s not a late night destination, but I reliably see folks there around HH.

  • The Dude

Sheesh-la-weesh! Is Comey testifying in the nude, or something?

    • jenster8dc

If so, they’re gonna need to double up on those vodka shots.

      • The Dude

I’m all for ditching work for a few White Russians mid-day, but this is ridiculous… although ditching work for a few White Russians while watching an investigation of Russian meddling… party!

        • Ben

          Вы имеете в виду, вечеринка!

  • dcd

We really need to do something about unemployment in this city.

    • idontgetit

Maybe open a coal mine or something?

      • dcd

I’d say you win the internet today, but on this particular day it’s far too early to make that call. You’re the leader in the clubhouse, but there are a lot of people still on the course.

        • Elvis’s Mom

          Seconded!

      • Ben

Only if it’s clean. We don’t want any black lung in this town!

  • L

I for one, love this. I’d rather be in a bar with other like-minded folks, than streaming this at my desk at work while trying to do actual work. Just saying!

  • ST21

Don’t these people have to work?

    • Bryan

There’s this amazing concept. It is called annual leave. The idea is that when you work for company, you accrue an allotted amount of time to use as you please (vacation, random day off, etc). It’s all the rage in Europe and the rest of the developed world but for reasons that make no sense whatsoever, is not as prominent here.

      • Joshua

Though the decision to use it to sit in a bar watching C-SPAN as opposed to sitting on a beach somewhere certainly says something about these individuals.

        • Bryan

Day drinking is day drinking. Appears to me they are having more fun than you or me no matter.

        • ST21

Just couldn’t imagine burning a PTO day on this. Maybe they didn’t tho- who knows.

        • dcd

It’s sorta social. Demented and sad, but social.

          • lakeisleinnisfree

I am taking a Lyft to D.C. Reynolds now since Shaw’s & Duffy’s were packed.
Proud to be demented & sad but social. That for breakfast club compliment!

        • Ben

You live in the political capital of a country of 320M+ people. This should not surprise you.

          • Joshua

It doesn’t surprise me, but that doesn’t mean I can’t laugh at the thought.

      • skj84

There is also another amazing concept called “Not everyone works a 9-5 office job”.

        • Bryan

Or grad school students. Or tourists. Or really anything. A lot of people are free to watch.

        • CHGal

I’m self-employed, will probably bill out 50+ hours his week, but I’m going to a bar this afternoon. Lots of people can make this happen.

    • dcd

Great quote from one of my favorite Twitter follows, Chuck Thies, commenting on a photo of what appears to be Shaw Tavern at 9:56 this morning (but may be some other bar):
      .
      Dear Mom and Dad,
      .
Send more money. I’m really close to finding a job and doing nothing but interviews.
      .
      Love,
      Your favorite millennial

      • Bryan

Sigh. Not one article like this can go by without attacking the millennials.

        • eggs

I mean, if you’re not spending your money on avocado toast today, the only other option is day drinking! We all know millennials don’t have jobs to go to and are just ruining every other industry anyway (“why aren’t millennials buying diamonds/homes/napkins/bar soap/etc?!?!”) so obviously they’re to blame for all of the people in bars today!

    • Commentator

Reports from within indicate that many “skipped work” which I would guess is called in sick? With PTO you don’t really have sick time per se, but if you’re required to schedule time off in advance you might have to play sick to take a last-minute day.

    • Truxton Triathlete

I was one of many people at Duffy’s on my laptop. Would have had the hearing on at work anyway. I got plenty done, and like many of my friends at the bar, working in politics means being plugged into these things anyway. To those who think we’re so lame, I’m not sure why getting pumped up over something that actually matters is weirder than giving a sh*t about sweaty men tackling each other or throwing/whacking toys into nets.

  • Elvis’s Mom

Anyone else think Ivy and Coney missed a “yooge” opportunity today?

  • lakeisleinnisfree

In line at shaw’s … what other places in NW are showing the hearing?
    I might try Duffy’s.

    • CHGal

      Looking Glass

  • Anonymous

Would rather sit on my couch with a beer in hand than stand for 3 hours in a packed bar, craning my neck to see & hear the TV while people gab around me. I don’t get this.

    • MadMax

Do you do everything everyone else does? If not, then you can surely understand how different people enjoy different activities. Many people simply like the social aspect.

  • MadMax

unfake is my new favorite word

  • tim

Might i just say, i really enjoy the irony of people complaining about others not working, while killing time commenting on an internet forum!

    • dcd

A positively Trumpian false equivalence. You have a future as a GOP communications flack!

    • Brooklyn Brawler

Was thinking the exact same thing
