Thanks to all who emailed and tweeted us. Samantha writes:

“I am in the Target in Columbia Heights right now and they are selling NO food or drink. Not even cat food. I asked am employee what it was, she didn’t seem to know and gave the very vague “it’s a license issue”, she thought maybe it would be back up in a week.”

Interesting… this isn’t the first time I’ve seen this happen at that Target.

I’m sure it’s gross and I don’t want to know

+1 but I will check back here for the story b/c I’m a glutton for punishment.

I’ve learned to scrutinize expiration dates on food I buy at Target. There’s consistently expired food on the shelves.

I am pretty grossed out…I bought some food (albeit packaged and non-perishable) there on Tuesday.

Isnt there a way to look up health code violations online? I remember seeing WaPo posting monthly violations from small infractions such as out of date inspections to as bad as rodent problems. I’m pretty sure last year or year before Target was shutdown from selling all food products due to rats which sadly is not uncommon at all.

Whatever it is, I’m not surprised. I drive 40 minutes into MD to avoid shopping at this disgusting mess of a store.

This store drove me to shop at Walmart instead.

I don’t know if its just me but I spot mice all of the time at stores. I’m always aware of what is running around on the floor. I can tell you that I’ve seen more mice in Montgomery and PG County stores (Whole Foods, Safeway, Costco and Target) than I do in DC stores. I’ve even seen an alive fly wrapped with a steak that was for sale. Lets not even talk about the flies inside butcher and seafood displays.

Yep, totally drive out to Harris Teeter between Potomac Yard/Crystal City.

    NBC Washington says rodents.

    • Kingman Park

Yeah, they probably don’t have a license for rodents. Must be what the clerk meant by that.

  • soozles

It was like that last night. Couldn’t even buy wine.

  • Lulu

Mice were spotted shopping in the food section!

The Target store in D.C.’s Columbia Heights neighborhood is barred from selling any food because rodents were spotted inside.
A health code violation for “presence of rodents” was issued to the store on Thursday, a D.C. Department of Health spokeswoman said.
“They are not allowed to sell any food items,” she said.
The cafe and Starbucks location inside the store on the 3100 block of 14th Street NW are closed. The remainder of the store is open.

A Target spokeswoman confirmed Thursday night that a violation had been issued.
When the store will be allowed to sell food again is still to be determined.

London fire makes a cameo appearance.

        LOL copy and paste fail!

I was there at 11:30am to get paper towels and a few food items. Nope, no food items anywhere. Even the soft drink cases and candy by the register is roped off. Hilarious to see the cat and dog food aisle included in this. I don’t wanna know why…

My pest control guy had to cancel on me yesterday morning because he was “on an emergency call at a Target.” There is no way Target’s rat problems are more important than my rat problems. Stupid flippin’ DC rats….

This store is disgusting. Edgar Target must be spinning in his grave.

  • peachy

That’s my photo above. I thought it was strange all of the perishable items: dairies, produce, etc, were still in place, just sitting out. If there were rodents, shouldn’t they have gotten rid of that food?? Blech.

    • textdoc

I think the key point is they can’t _sell_ any of that stuff while the DOH violation thing is in place.
      .
Whether they’re required to get rid of perishables, etc. after DOH lifts the order is something I’d be mighty curious to know. Also whether they’re required to go through non-gnawproof packaged items (say, packaged cookies) to make sure that rodents haven’t interfered with them.
