Mattie asks:

“Any news on why Capitol Hill Yoga closed? It was one of my favorites, and I thought it was popular…”

Capitol Hill Yoga’s Facebook page wrote on May 28th:

“With all of my heart I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to and practiced at Capitol Hill Yoga over the past 8+ years. I absolutely wish you the best both on and off the mat. Please keep practicing. Namaste! ~Stacey”

Capitol Hill Yoga opened in 2009 at 641 Pennsylvania Ave, SE.

I bought a Gilt City deal there about 6 months ago (first sign of failing…). The yoga studio was not very good, imo. Lots of classes had hardly anyone in them. Classes, without the gilt city deal, were overpriced compared to other studios with more hefty offerings. So, I’m guessing it’s $$$ related.

Out of curiosity, since my wife is always looking for good studios in the neighborhood, which ones would you say offer better rates / classes nearby?

405 yoga WV and FL NE. its a quick 90 bus ride up and they are great!

seconding 405 yoga — they are more power/rocket yoga focused and just an all around great community

St marks yoga, 3rd and A se.

St. Marks is a great option for the budget conscious. There’s only a handful of classes a week, and most are held in a musty basement, but the instructors are very good.

East Side Yoga on 10th above the auto repair shop is outstanding, and the pricing seems very reasonable. The instructors are great at their jobs, but are also really genuine outside of the classes as well.

Be Here Now Yoga on 8th

I’ve tried most of the local yoga options and Be Here Now is by far my favorite. Great instructors and the studio is gorgeous. They also have a sale going on right now!

Perhaps their lease expired/is about to expire and the LL wanted more money in rent than they could afford?

How about Petworth Bikram. Why did it close? I miss that place.

  • above7-11

Yes, lots of news. However I’ll leave it at this, Wait for Realignment yoga studio to open shortly at 641 Pennsylvania ave SE!

Isn’t that from a previous Capital Hill Yoga owner? Sounds like something bad went down between the owners. (They did a gofundme, too. Why should students pay to help open a studio?)

  • I’m the previous co-owner of Capitol Hill Yoga (2009-2015). I sold my share to my business partner at end of 2015 to focus on my growing family and accept position as Executive Director for CHAMPS, Capitol Hill’s Chamber of Commerce. I feel CHY closure was a result of Stacey also deciding to change her path. But the great news is Realignment Studio (www.realignmentstudio.com) will open at 641 Pennsylvania Ave. SE in just a few weeks. Realignment Studio is a yoga, meditation and wellness studio and will occupy both the downstairs and upstairs of the building. Alyson Shade is the founder and I am a partner in the studio. We will have a full schedule of vinyasa and hatha yoga classes for all levels and daily meditation classes. We plan to build a robust wellness program as the studio develops.

Although I’ve moved on to other studios, I appreciated having CHY as a yoga option when there weren’t many others in the neighborhood. Realignment Studio sounds great (especially the meditation classes that other places don’t have) and I’m looking forward to it!
