“Dear PoPville,

Zaan Scott is the swim instructor at Rumsey Pool. He’s such a great guy and always full of smiles, and this is just devastating. Please share the link to his GoFundMe!”

On April 9th, on his way home after work in SE, he was approached by an armed assailant looking to rob him. A second assailant appeared out of the shadows and shot him in the back. Although the assailants did not take any of his material belongings before running away, they stole his health, independence, sense of safety and livelihood in that one moment when they fired the gun. Police are still looking for the gunmen.

The bullet shattered Zaan’s sixth vertebrae and severed half of his spinal cord. He is currently paralyzed from the waist down and is living in rehab until he is self sufficient again. He attends physical and occupational therapy three hours each day to rehabilitate his spinal cord injury and goes into each session challenging himself to work even harder than the last session. He is desperately clinging to the hope that he will walk again soon and hopes to be back in the pool as soon as possible. Although Zaan is strong and faithful, it will not be an easy road to recovery!

Zaan is in need of financial assistance to get him through this time of need, and he believes in the kindness of strangers, friends and his community.

We are hoping to raise money through this fund to cover the following:

**Relocation to a safe, wheelchair accessible community and apartment by June 1, 2017.
**Purchasing some of the costly equipment insurance will not pay for, but will be necessary for his rehabilitation (such as a portable commode, standing frame, tub chair, etc.).
**Funds to defray the costs of food, rent and other daily expenses since he will be out of work for a long time.

Please support Zaan by donating to this fund!

Any amount will help as he battles to walk again and to keep his spirits up in this time of need.

Zaan also welcomes visitors and asks you all to keep him and his recovery in your thoughts and prayers!
Help spread the word!

    Heartbreaking.

  • Blktldy

That is awful. I exercise at that pool and have seen him teaching classes many times. What a senseless crime.

  • LedroitTigah

Zaan – my heart truly goes out to you.

  • Kingman Park

I really hope they find who did this and never let them see the light of day.
    .
    Get well soon.

  • LNontheHill

Zaan was the one who finally taught me how to swim with my face in the water. What a great instructor, and what a terrible act. Ugh.

  • KellyKapowski

This is awful. I just donated. I didn’t know Zann but he seems like such an amazing contributor to the community. I hope that his new apartment and lifestyle will still allow him to be a part of Rumsey Pool.

Like Kelly, I don’t know Zaan, but I’ve donated because he’s clearly a wonderful human being and community member. I hope someone is helping him to figure out how to apply for Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income, because it sure sounds to me like his injuries may prevent him from working for 12 months, the basic medical criterion for DI and SSI.

I also hope he is applying to the DC Crime Victims Compensation Program, which compensates victims of crime for out-of-pocket expenses resulting from their victimization

  • Mt Pleasant guy

I don’t know Zaan but I just donated to his fund. Get well soon: walk, swim, teach, live.

  • SWLEGDC

Just donated. What a heartbreaking thing to happen to this man, but his strength is inspirational and I will keep him in my prayers.

  • Jen

I just received a Go Fund Me update email that he collapsed and passed away today. Even though I never met him I am just beside myself for his significant other and his family. Prayers to them.

Me too. I did not know him either, but I feel heartbroken. I’m the same age as him.
