Handsome Cock becomes Vivid Lounge on U Street

1334 U Street, NW

Well, they put up a good fight

Vivid’s Facebook page says:

“Vivid Lounge will quickly become your favorite destination this summer! We will bring some new flavor to the District by catering to a diverse crowd and offering great deals on drinks & food. Also, did we mention we’re located at the heart of DC’s historic U St. Corridor? More info coming soon.”

Handsome Cock (formerly Touchdown, and Momo’s sports bar), above the Codmother, is now Vivid Lounge.

And that’s pretty much all I have to say about that.

That is somehow an even worse name than its predecessor. Which is really something.

    • Hill Denizen

I thought the last name was kind of clever, but I definitely wouldn’t want to say it out loud.

  • Anonynon

Theres nothing really historic about this…..certainly not what is inside here, or cod mother for that matter. Ligitimate question: is it that easy to open up a bar that will almost certainly ‘fail’ and still make off with a profit?

You’re disputing that the U Street corridor is historic? You need to learn some D.C. history.

      • Anonynon

I understand there is history on the block, but I think to say that this area is ‘historic’ in the present tense is a bit of a stretch. Its literally just watering holes full of drunk people from outside the neighborhood.

          “‘historic’ in the present tense”

I feel like I’m in Infinity Mirrors for words.

          • textdoc

            LOL!

Speak for yourself. I live on U Street. I love the fact that I can go left or right down the block and get a drink and some good food without wasting time on getting a cab or uber nor have to take the metro.

          • Anonynon

I agree…im just saying, is that historic? ugh. nvm keep my thoughts in my head.

          • Bryan

To be fair, when you say things like “historic in the present tense” you deserve some flak. No duh it isn’t “historic in the present tense.” The U Street of today is far different from the U Street of old was. It is a historic area predominantly for African Americans. Not for the average poster of popville.

That said, the U Street of today is great because it is arguably the best nightlife area of Washington DC now due to its close proximity to every type of nightlife. Whether you want a club, a local bar, gay bar, music, movies, whatever type of restaurant you want, everything is within walking distance of U Street. The current version is itself hip and great.

          • Bryan

I guess what I am trying to say is that presently it is not historic. But it is a great place to be right now.

          • Blithe

            Um, Bryan? Flak:

” It is a historic area predominantly for African Americans. Not for the average poster of popville. ” It is true — at least from the stats that I recall, that “the average poster of popville” (sic) is not African American. It is also true that U Street has a particular importance for many African Americans, and even more importance, perhaps, for those of us who have family ties with pre-so-called-integration DC. Your comment though, suggests to me that U Streets history is “not for” anybody other than African Americans. Could you say a bit more about what you mean by that — while I try not to jump to too many conclusions?

          • MadMax

I can only assume / hope he meant the history that people associate with the neighborhood was driven by black culture, rather than meaning that it would only be relevant to black people. The latter would just be absurd, although I wouldn’t put it past someone.

  • samanda_bynes

this couldn’t be more generic sounding.

  • anon7

U Street actually needed a strip club! Wait a sec… its called Vivid Lounge and its NOT a strip club? Blasphemy.

  • Catatac

Why not go all out and get really into a theme and call it the Vivid Video Lounge?

But seriously, if you say it out-loud doesn’t it sound a bit like Velvet Lounge? Especially while drunk and possibly slurring?

  • MadMax

“Vivid Lounge will quickly become your favorite destination this summer!”
    No it won’t.
“We will bring some new flavor to the District by catering to a diverse crowd and offering great deals on drinks & food.”
Please explain how you’ve determined the diverse interests of the crowd you’re catering to… in DC people of all ilks appreciate great deals, and we’ll be the judges of how great they are, not you.

  • Mo

Walked by this place the other night they definitely cleaned up the inside. It looks way better than before and they were serving shisha. I will stop by just to check out the drink prices.
