If you spot a person driving poorly around town and get a good photo please send in an email where you spotted it to [email protected] and I’ll add it to the queue. People Driving Poorly is made possible by a generous grant from the Ben and Sylvia Gardner foundation.

I saw an accident in the same spot a year ago with a guy in a jeep. He took out the street lamp and a small tree. I was walking by right as the medics showed up and he looked pretty drunk. Thankfully no one was on that part of the sidewalk.

Driver should be arrested and jailed for reckless endangerment and billed for any damage caused to public infrastructure.

Okay, I’ll be the one to say it this time: how does this even happen??? Was there a second car involved? That stretch of Park Road is narrow and congested, and you couldn’t go more than about 20 mph even if you wanted to.

+1. My thought too! So weird!

    • MadMax

Upside down and sideways, that’s some talent!

I know, right??? This one deserves some kind of special prize.

    • dcd

Yeah, and looking at the picture, that is really close to 14th. Not a lot of space to get up to speed. I’m always puzzled by how these car flips happen, but this one is really baffling.

Here’s my guess: this driver went barrelling through the intersection at 14th (probably trying to beat a red light), came upon the usual backup/congestion in the block far too fast to stop, and swerved hard to the left to try to avoid rear-ending the car in front of them.

All my other explanations involve supernatural forces or aliens.

Is this the fate of all the people I see racing down narrow, low-speed-limit streets to reach the next stop as quickly as possible? I always wonder what happens to those people.

Popville has a grant for people driving poorly segment? Quite fitting!

  • anon

Reckless driving just infuriates me. That no pedestrians have been injured in these accidents is amazing. This is not an “accident”, this is reckless endangerment.

  • GOI

This is no more common in DC than any other city. It is actually extremely easy to flip a car or SUV and it happens constantly all over the country.

    • ah

Well sure, but it’s got to be a lot easier to flip one taking an exit ramp on I-80 in Nebraska too fast for conditions than on a narrow city street.

  • Anon NS

    Again. HOW?!?!
Short of someone popping out of a manhole in a Marval movie, I do not understand how this happens on a narrow straight one-way street.

    • MadMax

Damn those sewer-living Ninja Turtles and their hi-jinks!

      • SSS

Yeah, it seems crazy. Maybe flew through the intersection and then clipped a car and careened of a curb? I would love to blame one of DC’s moon-crater like potholes that adorn our streets, but even that seems implausible.
