“Dear PoPville,

In a couple months I’m moving to Cleveland OH and can’t afford a moving company for the trip so I’m looking to only contract help moving the items from my apartment into a U-Haul truck. Wondering if anyone may be able to recommend a local DC company where I can hire a crew. I don’t want to go to craigslist for obvious reasons.”

Maybaum’s Movers– they are only $25/per person/hour. They’ve moved me twice, and I really like them.

I used https://www.bookstoremovers.com/ and they gave me a nice discount because I moved during a Wednesday.

I also heard about http://www.twomarinesmoving.com/ if you want to help out some vets.

I second this. I used them to load a POD and they were fast and experienced in properly loading everything into the POD to maximize space and minimizing damage. I was afraid that they weren’t going to be able to fit everything but with the exception of a vacuum cleaner and two boxes, they got everything in. If you mention Angie’s List, I think it’s an extra 10% off. I think with most movers, if you mention Angie’s List, you can get a discount.

They moved our 1br to a row house in about an hour. Super nice and fast! Can’t recommend them enough.

Seconding Maybaum’s! We had them for 3 hours to get an entire apartment’s worth of stuff from our storage unit near Andrews to our apartment in Cathedral Heights, and they packed the truck expertly (so we only had to make one trip), drove the massive thing through awful traffic, and moved everything to our second floor place. Best $130 I ever spent.

And HOORAY for you moving to Cleveland! That’s where I’m from. It’s not DC, but that can be a good thing!

I know Beltway Movers also hires out their movers without the truck. Not sure of the price.

I and my acquaintances have used Gentle Giant (https://www.gentlegiant.com/) twice for this express purpose, and five times for regular moves and have nothing but good things to say.

For a recent move, I got moving help through U-Haul when I booked the truck and they were great. I think it was Alonso’s. They showed up early, worked hard and quickly, and were very gentle with my belongings. Booking and payment were through U-Haul. I would definitely do that again.

My truck buddy has always been amazing – used them 3 times locally. My friends have used them more than once for exactly what you’re asking for. Also, they charge by the quarter hour and don’t round up.

They moved me in a downpour and whipping winds during Superstorm Sandy. Fast, efficient, and friendly!

When you rent a Uhaul, they give you an option to pick a crew to help for two hours (usually in the $120-175 range depending on the time, day of the week, etc.). I used Alfonso’s out of Gaithersburg for my last move when selecting options and they were awesome. Had my old apartment on the truck in under 45 minutes and moved me in in less than an hour.

Same! These guys are great. Used them twice and (we’ve left DC) we’d use then again if we could! Effective, quick (but not rushed), and peaceful.

This group is out of Alexandria, if that’s local enough for you, and serve the DC area. They have perfect rating on yelp and are great guys. https://www.yelp.com/biz/marco-polo-pro-moving-alexandria

I HIGHLY recommend Great Scott movers. They helped me move in February and were great. Prompt, very professional, and very fast. My final price was under estimate. They moved my whole house and they only damage was a very small scratch to my desk.

I have used bookstore movers on two occasions and they are great- super efficient! I second the comment about Cleveland! Glad to hear of people moving (back?) there. I’m from there too and it’s developed such a great food and beer scene these last few years-enjoy!

I used Mic’s Moving in March, and they were great. http://www.micsmoving.com/

You can “add on” movers to your Uhaul truck rental through Moving Help. If you already rented your truck, you can put a truck in your Uhaul shopping cart again, add the movers, then delete the truck at check out. I just moved last week with DMV Best Movers. I scheduled them through Moving Help through Uhaul too. I believe it was $95 for 2 guys for 2 hours who were great at moving and packing. Although, they only come with their hands, e.g. no dollies, etc. I bough a Cosco brand convertible dolly/hand truck off of Amazon for less than $40 and THAT was the best $40 I ever spent. Also, beware, Uhaul cancelled my truck not once but twice- once before the day of the move and they confirmed a new location and time and then again on the morning of the move when we showed up 45 mins outside of DC to the second, new and confirmed location only to find out they had no trucks. We also paid in advance, in full, at least a month before. Just be prepared with a Plan B if you can.

Sorry- I just want to clarify that DMV Best Movers were great at loading and packing THE TRUCK (so that belongings did not move about while we drove or come crashing down.) They did not pack the apartment for $95- pretty sure that is a separate service not included in the Moving Help quote. If you did not want to go through Moving Help, I’d call someone on the Moving Help web site that has excellent reviews in your area and ask if they’d honor the same price on the Moving Help web site. Word is that Uhaul/Moving Help takes 15% from the, so they may honor the price from Uhaul/Moving Help without having to book through them. The good thing about Uhaul/Moving Help though is that you pay Uhaul/Moving Help in advance and get a payment code and you only give the payment code to the movers once they finished the job and the code releases the money to them. Nice way to pay and not scramble for cash (other than tip) on moving day.

  • I’ve used We Haul DC three times and they are always VERY reasonable on price and are very careful with my items. The owner, Dave, is very responsive and easy to work with. Sometimes he actually shows up with his crew at no extra cost to help!
