Well this is a first! Thanks to J. for sending:

“Not a raptor, but… Perhaps still of interest? Ed. Note: Hell yes. Apologies for the delay in posting (this and all other tips/emails) as I was out of town last Wed.-Sun.

I saw this tortoise toddling along the center of Logan Circle on Wednesday afternoon. This guy definitely did not belong there, and I didn’t see anyone who might have potentially been its owner. I called animal control, and I hope it is in a more appropriate environment now.”

If you spot a hawk or any other bird of prey or any interesting wildlife around town, lunching or otherwise, and get a good photo please send in an email where you spotted it to [email protected] and I’ll add it to the queue. Hawks around Town is made possible by a generous grant from the Ben and Sylvia Gardner foundation.

not gonna lie, I like this a lot more than the hawks

The headline made me think this was going to be a photo of a hawk grabbing a tortoise as prey. Was relieved to discover that it was just a tortoise with no hawks involved.

Looks like a box turtle. It’s pretty rare to even see these in the woods anymore and especially in the middle of the city, though they are native to the area.

I saw an animal control officer pick him up, put him in a little case, and take him away around 6:30 pm on Wednesday. He seemed to be having a grand old time in the circle up until then!
