From MPD:

“On April 28, 2017 at approximately 7:30 pm, a 911 call was received for the sounds of gunshots in the 1400 Block of Wisconsin Avenue NW. Second District units responded to the location and were unable to locate a victim or crime scene.

Shortly thereafter, a victim arrived at GW Hospital suffering from a minor injury. A preliminary investigation revealed that this incident did not involve the victim being a target of a crime. This investigation is ongoing and there is no perceived danger to the community.”

So what are the options here? Man shoots self? Shot by a friend? Stray bullet?

  • SF

In my old (rough) neighborhood in another city, this type of thing happened at least once on my street: A guy got shot in the foot for breaking some gang rules. He then checked himself into the ER, saying he had shot himself accidentally. That way police don’t get involved.

Backfiring European luxury sedan is the most likely culprit here

  • iwdc

Also seems odd that he turns up at GW hospital, no? Isn’t this closer to Georgetown hospital?

    • anonymouse

If you have a gsw, GW is a much better bet.

      • FoggyBottom

Georgetown is a level 2 trauma center (may be level 1 after their new tower is built), GW is level 1. Hospital Center is the best bet, but in a pinch, go to the place that is closest and can handle it

Can religious hospitals be level 1 trauma? I thought the mere fact that they refuse a whole class of services means they cannot obtain that designation (but I could be misremembering this from a decade ago when I worked at a midwestern hospital).

    • FridayGirl

This is true. Perhaps someone dropped him off. I like SF’s theory above (although he also could have just been eff’ing around and shot himself.)

That sidewalk would have been pretty busy at that time. Curious indeed, but as wild speculation my guess is self inflicted, and not just a story to cover up something as the first poster suggested.

  • John

Definitely very strange and I don’t see how this could have happened at 7:30pm on a Friday on that block without 100 people immediately seeing what happened (unless the guy was in an alley or something).

    • FridayGirl

I mean, aren’t those sneaker stores and other kind of odd stores along that stretch? (Are they still open? I haven’t been there in awhile.) It’s possible it was someone just screwing around inside a store.

      • John

Yeah that’s definitely possible…plus one of those stores is and has been empty for a long time now. Maybe someone was in there with a gun and did something stupid.

  • Bruce

The article says, “Shortly thereafter, a victim arrived at GW Hospital suffering from a minor injury.” Are we supposed to assume that it was a gun-related injury? For all we know, the victim could have been someone who was hit by a bike in another part of town, right?

    • FridayGirl

Yes, but it seems that the police confirmed this was the guy based on the next sentence: “A preliminary investigation revealed that this incident did not involve the victim being a target of a crime.”

  • Oldhouselover

Shots were in the air. Someone got hit with the bullet on its way down. Just a theory.

    • BlueStreak

That would be a crime though, no?

      • lizcolleena

Does “the victim was not a target of a crime” mean it isn’t a crime at all? (Genuine question.) My first thought was that this meant it was random in some way, and that the victim wasn’t mugged or something else in addition to the GSW.

“No, no, no! I said, ‘Throw your HANDS up in the air, and wave ’em like you just don’t care!”!”

  • northeazy

This is why I don’t go to Georgetown anymore. Too dangerous. Plus those strip clubs.

My guess is the professor in the library with the musket; it accidentally discharges, the bullet ricochets off the mirror, hits the candlestick, which falls off the mantle, onto the maid and knocks her out cold.

Glad to hear it’s only minor injuries, could have been much worse.

    • Anon

Wouldn’t be the first time that a professor discharged in the Georgetown library.
