“Dear PoPville,

What are some of the best bars with live music on Friday/Saturday nights? My usual go-to is Roofers Union or New Vegas Lounge (each of which have their own distinct style). Would love to start expanding to other cool bars with good live tunes!”

    Midlands, on Georgia Ave

Bin 1301 has nice free jams from Thursday to Saturday.

  • ST21

The Loft at The Hamilton usually has great free live music. The setup isn’t the best but the bands are always quality.

  • MtP

Its not “cool,” but Nanny O’Briens has live music every Friday/Saturday starting at 10pm and its a great laid back atmosphere. They styles and quality can range greatly.

The Birchmere in Alexandria is one of my favs.

Isn’t that really a concert venue, though — not a bar that sometimes has live music?

      • navyard

True. You sit down and stay for the entire show. But you are served food and drinks throughout that entire show at your table.

It is a great, intimate way to enjoy music– don’t love the food, but still.

Jojo’s on U street is always hoppin with some blues or jazz band. Tryst also USED to have some live jazz every week, don’t know if they’re still doing it. Of course, you can’t go wrong with 9:30 club.

Hill Country (wider variety than just country!) and The Loft at Hamilton Live are my go-tos.

    IOTA! in Clarendon (Arlington, VA).

  • Anon

Fado in Chinatown has decent live music on Saturdays.

  • DC

Madams Organ is usually a good spot for live music in a bar atmosphere.

  • A Nonymous

Mr. Henry’s near Eastern Market has live jazz or blues most nights!

    • SassyinDC (formerely)

      yes! and bluegrass on Thursdays.

Boundary Stone in Bloomingdale has free music several times a month. It also has an awesome Open Mic Night on Mondays.

If you’re open to Arlington, the following all usually have live music on weekends:
    – Ireland’s Four Courts
    – World of Beer
    – Ragtime
    – O’Sullivans
    – IOTA
    And I’ll second Fado!

    • NC

Since we’re talking Arlington, Clarendon Grill has live 90s cover bands on Saturday nights. $5 cover, I think. Clarendon Grill is Clarendon Grill but the bands are usually pretty good!

If you’re out in the hinterlands– you can check out the Clifton General Store in Clifton, VA (Fairfax County, VA) on Saturday nights.

Acre 121, but I heard they’re closing! Gypsy Sally’s is fantastic, but a pain in the tush to get to.

Columbia Station is the earliest jazz I can find on Saturdays, live band starts at 5pm.

Tabard Inn Sundays (and I think Mon-Tues) has a jazz trio in the fireplace room. This is probably the happiest I am in DC is sitting there.

  • Haydee’s Restaurant, 3102 Mount Pleasant NW, at Irving. They have a wide range of styles, from Latin to Zydeco to C & W, they have a dance floor, and there’s no cover charge. My band, Los Caribbeat, plays there once a month, and has for the past couple of years. It’s one of the few clubs we like to perform in.

    • MHillPark

+1. Love Haydee’s on weekend nights!
