“We are raising funds to purchase ad space on a DC metro station and replace them with cats.”

Cat Metro Takeover
via Kickstarter

hahaha fantastic!! Thanks to one of the organizers for emailing us. From The Citizens Advertising Takeover Service – Washington, DC kickstarter page:

“Back in September 2016, Citizens Advertising Takeover Service launched the first takeover at Clapham Station in London. So we are now taking it across the pond and launch the first one in the USA, starting with the nation’s capital.

We want to takeover a small DC metro station…something like Dupont Circle or even Cleveland Park (in honor of Ollie, the National Zoo’s bobcat).

Whoa…How?

If we raise enough funds, we can probably takeover half of a small station. But if we raise more than our goal…we could take over the whole station or maybe a station domination (wishful thinking).

ALSO…we are working Animal Welfare League of Montgomery County to provide us with photos of their kitties.

But…Why?

Because…why not? It may be a silly project, but it’s a distraction from the chaotic lives we live. It’s a way to step out of the norm of ads on the Metro…away from convincing us to buy a brand new car, or looking mighty fine in a brand new pair of jeans…or politics.

Even if cats won’t make you happy, admit it…you will smile once you walk past one of these.

Who knows, maybe it will make your day or even your whole month (because that’s how long these ads will be up at a Metro station)!”

If interested you can donate here.

    Aww, that’s so twee!

30k! I’d rather see that money go to the Humane Society. But it’s a cute idea.

      +1.

This feels very 2016. People can spend their money how they want, and now I’m being a grump, but this just rubs me the wrong way right now.

I’m usually all for whimsy but it really rubs me the wrong way too. If it was whimsy for a cause maybe I’d be all for it. 30k could really move mountains for the Humane Society.

        • FridayGirl

Agreed. $30k can do a lot for a LOT of places and people. There are much larger fish to fry than metro ads (unfortunately).

This is a cute idea but the founder did not do her research. She initially partnered with a rescue that is currently facing trial for neglect of its cats. Since numerous people have complained, she has finally removed reference to that organization (Charm City Animal Rescue) but not before defending her relationship to them over emails. So- she knew about the neglect case against them, but chose to promote them anyway.

Your money would be better spent by donating to a local reputable animal rescue organization.

But we need another non-profit to skim money that would have otherwise gone to other well-meaning non-profits! ;-)
      .
I agree that people should donate money directly to WARL or the Humane Society.

      • Commentator

Just a note for anyone who may not be aware, but those two organizations have merged and are now the Humane Rescue Alliance (HRA) which I agree would be happy to take your money.

        • Anon

          Ah, thanks for the heads-up!

  • wdc

If your promotional materials answer “why” with “why not” you have no business asking for other people’s money.

  • Anon

This is absurd. Donate the money to the Humane Rescue Alliance instead.

    • Do you spend every discretionary dollar of yours on charity?

      • Aram Vartian

Sure, because an individual spending a few bucks on entertainment is exactly the same as a national fundraising campaign without a purpose.

        • Well if I choose to give a few bucks yes, yes it is exactly that. Fortunately being sanctimonious is free.

    • Tux da Cat

Agree. My money is going to the Humane Society.

  • Seems wasteful

I love cats (and my cat) but a better idea might be to take those stacks of money and burn them as a nice campfire to make s’mores. Which, of course, is a terrible idea.

$30k to an animal shelter could go a long way…

  • Cleveland Park runner

I’d be cooler with this if they didn’t say “even Cleveland Park.” What’s your shade on my beloved CP?

    • DC Kitties

Haha – no shade! I went for Dupont first because it’s small and only has approx. 13 ad spaces…but then Ollie happened and a light bulb went off in my head.

  • DC_Chica

It’s a cute idea, but for anyone in need of more cute cat pics, I recommend the make kittens great again add-on to chrome. It makes reading the news a little less painful.

    • DC Kitties

      I love that Chrome add-on!

  • Victoria

    Take my money.
