This whole series is a testament to how little attention the average driver is paying to his or her own surroundings.

omg – how do people not check their mirror before they open their car door!? I always check for cyclists. A trolley car is pretty damn hard to miss!

    • soozles

Probably had a phone stuck to the side of his/her head.

  • Mug of Glop

It’s lucky that the entity that got doored wasn’t a cyclist.

  • CPT_Doom

Plus side? The insurance adjuster is going to have one heck of a story to write up.

  • tim

alright @MD_Driver_in_DC – you’re off the hook for this one…

  • L.

This seems to be framed that the streetcar somehow failed, but hey, it’s the driver’s responsibility to not hit another car or a bike when they open the door, why not a huge honkin’ streetcar?

    • ontarioroader

Yep, DC Code Title 18: 2214.4 No person shall open any door of a vehicle unless it is reasonably safe to do so and can be done without interfering with moving traffic, bicyclists, or pedestrians and with safety to such person and passengers. No person shall leave a door open on a side of a vehicle available to moving traffic for a period of time longer than necessary to receive or discharge passengers.

Every cyclist who has been doored should save this somewhere. I’ve had two MPD officers try to ticket me over the years for being a dooring victim, when they should have been going after the driver.

    • anon

Yeah. It’s not like a bus moves any slower or, in this timescale, could maneuver around a door at all.

    • Anonymous

Yeah, but logic and law are irrelevant when people have already decided who they want to blame, right?
